The State Freight Rail Plan Update fulfils Federal Railroad Administration requirements that the state establish, update and revise a Rail Plan at periodic intervals in order to receive Local Rail Freight Assistance funds. The Georgia Department of Transportation first published the State Rail Freight Plan in 1978 to address a series of rail line abandonments experienced in the state since the 1960’s. Subsequent updates were published in 1980, 1985 and 1989.

The 2000 Georgia Rail Freight Plan Update is being completed in two phases:

  • Phase One provides updated general information about the state’s railroads and identifies needed rail programs to rehabilitate and preserve rail freight transportation.

  • Phase Two will focus on the development of the programs identified in Phase One. Additional fieldwork will be necessary to gather and compile the detailed information needed to develop and implement these programs.  Phase Two will be completed by the end of Fiscal Year 2002.
